Today, we bring you an interesting development from Hanwell Rural Community in the Province of New Brunswick.
On July 19th, a pivotal decision was made that would have far-reaching consequences for Hanwell Councillor Pat Septon. In a 4-2 vote, Septon was suspended from Council for a staggering 90 days, a decision stemming from his alleged breach of the council's code of conduct.
Coun. Darren MacKenzie brought forth the suspension motion, shedding light on the extent of alleged misinformation that had been spread by Councillor Septon. MacKenzie passionately spoke about the undue stress caused to councillors and municipal staff by this situation. He expressed his frustration, saying, "A reasonable person would stop when local people are telling them they're doing something wrong, and reevaluate what they're doing, but not in this case.”
Councillor Mackenzie pointed that this should serve as a cautionary tale for other municipalities. He pointed out how Councillor Septon had ventured into podcasts to spread alleged misinformation, including a recent appearance on our very own Cross Border Interviews Episode 589, released on July 6th.
In light of this development, we reached out to Hanwell Rural Community, seeking clarity and understanding on this matter. We invited Hanwell Mayor Dave Morrison to appear on our show to discuss the events leading up to the July 19th vote and the impact these last seven months have had on their community.
