Everything You Need to Know About the 2026 PEI Municipal Elections

For the smallest province in Confederation, this marks the unofficial kickoff to the 2026 municipal election season.

On November 2nd, residents in all 56 municipalities across Prince Edward Island—one city, ten towns, and 45 rural municipalities—will head to the polls to choose the next generation of local leaders who will help shape their communities for the next four years.

As another municipal term comes to a close, it's an important time to take stock of where municipalities across PEI stand today. What are the biggest opportunities and challenges facing local governments? What qualities make an effective municipal leader? And for those considering putting their name on the ballot for the very first time, what should they know before taking that step?

We'll also explore the role of the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities throughout the election cycle, and how it works to support municipalities and advocate on behalf of local governments across the Island.

To help answer those questions, we're pleased to welcome Bruce MacDougall, President of the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities. Bruce has been a fixture in municipal government since 1989, bringing decades of experience and perspective on local leadership, governance, and the evolving role of municipalities in Prince Edward Island.
