Inside GFOA: Supporting Alberta's Finance Leaders

Today, we're talking about one of the organizations that works behind the scenes to strengthen municipal government across the province: the Government Finance Officers Association of Alberta, or GFOA Alberta.

While residents may not always think about municipal finance, it's at the heart of everything a municipality does—from building roads and maintaining infrastructure to delivering essential services and planning for the future.

GFOA Alberta brings together finance professionals from municipalities and other levels of government to share knowledge, build professional networks, and advance excellence in public financial management.

The association promotes education and training, supports provincial, national, and international conferences, works closely with Alberta Municipal Affairs on emerging financial issues, and helps ensure that government finance professionals have the tools they need to serve their communities effectively.

As Alberta's affiliate of the international Government Finance Officers Association, it also connects local professionals to best practices from across Canada and around the world.

So, what does GFOA Alberta do? Why does its work matter to municipalities of every size? And what are the biggest financial issues facing local governments today?

Joining us to help unpack it all is the President of GFOA Alberta, Travis Nosko, Director of Corporate Services with the Town of Morinville. Travis, welcome to Municipal Affairs.
