Minister Tibbs Reflects on Jasper Meeting

When we think about municipal government, it's easy to focus on what happens in our own town or city. But the reality is that many of the biggest challenges facing communities today don't stop at provincial borders.
Whether it's housing pressures, homelessness, emergency preparedness, or the growing demands on local governments, municipalities across Canada are grappling with many of the same issues.
Last month, Newfoundland and Labrador's Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, the Honourable Chris Tibbs, joined his counterparts from every province and territory in Alberta for their annual meeting.
On the agenda were some of the most pressing concerns facing local governments today—from municipal capacity and respectful governance to homelessness, poverty, and preparing communities for increasingly frequent natural disasters.
The visit also included a stop where Minister Tibbs met with Municipality of Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland to discuss wildfire recovery and the lessons communities can learn as climate-related emergencies become more common.
Those conversations reinforced the importance of planning and ensuring municipalities of every size—from cities to local service districts and unincorporated communities—have the tools they need to respond when disaster strikes.
