Two Elections. One Province. One Headache.
It was the talk of the town at this year's UBCM Convention in Vancouver.
And on September 22nd, Premier David Eby pulled the trigger and issued the writs for the 2026 Provincial Election for October 24th, one week after the 2026 BC Municipal Election. r
Municipal leaders are now asking a question that could have very real consequences for candidates, voters and election officials: What happens when a provincial election and a municipal election collide?
For municipal candidates, it could mean competing for attention with provincial campaigns. For voters, it could mean sorting out two very different elections — and two very different levels of government.
And for journalists and election officials, it could mean trying to keep up with two campaigns happening at the same time.
But British Columbia wouldn't be the first province to face the challenge.
In 2025, Newfoundland and Labrador found itself in almost exactly this situation. The province's municipal election was held October 2, followed just 12 days later by a provincial election on October 14. The provincial writs were issued September 15, right in the middle of the municipal campaign.
So what happened? Did the provincial campaign overshadow municipal candidates? Did voters understand the difference between the two elections? And what did municipalities learn from the experience?
Today, we look back at that extraordinary election period with Alexis Foster, Acting CAO of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador.
And as British Columbia considers the possibility of its own overlapping campaigns, we're asking what lessons Newfoundland and Labrador can offer — and whether two elections can share the same political stage without one drowning out the other.
