Welcome to Municipal Affairs.
This past week, over 2,000 municipal leaders from every province and territory descended on the nation’s capital for the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities Tradeshow and Convention. Held at the Rogers Centre in downtown Ottawa, this four-day event served as a vital forum for mayors, councillors, and municipal officials to come together — to listen, to share, and to lead.
The conversations were timely and urgent. From calls for bail reform and stronger support for mental health and addiction services, to the growing demand for stable, predictable federal funding and the fight against misinformation in our increasingly digital world — the agenda touched on the core challenges facing communities from coast to coast to coast.
But while geography and demographics may differ, many of the struggles are shared.
At the convention, we caught up with Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron to talk about those very parallels — the issues his city faces and how they resonate with municipalities big and small across the country.
We also asked him why an organization like the FCM is not just helpful, but essential for a northern city like Whitehorse, navigating complex needs with limited resources and a changing climate.
