A 36 Year Career

ree

Welcome to Municipal Affairs.

After more than three decades of public service, Parkland County Councillor Phyllis Kobasiuk is closing the book on a remarkable career in local government.

Since 1989, she’s been a fixture at the council table — logging over 1,400 meetings, championing sustainable policies, and leading with a focus on delivering services under controlled taxation.

Kobasiuk made history as Parkland’s first publicly elected Mayor, and her imprint can be seen in everything from infrastructure strategies and IT upgrades to the creation of the Municipal Art Program.

But perhaps her most enduring legacy - according to her is the Acheson Industrial Park — a hub of over 10,000 employees today — regarded as a gold standard for economic development across Western Canada.

Her contributions didn’t stop at the county line.

She served as a School Board Chair, spent a decade on the board of the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and even worked as a peer mentor with Alberta Disputes Resolution. And through it all, she’s remained committed to lifelong learning, family, and a deep passion for community.

On today’s episode, we sit down with Councillor Kobasiuk to reflect on 33 years of public service.

We’ll hear what inspired her work, the milestones she’s most proud of, and what she sees as the future of Parkland County now that she’s stepping away from elected office.
