Budget and Tariffs in Nova Scotia

Welcome to Municipal Affairs,

In this episode we’re diving into Nova Scotia’s 2025-26 budget—what it delivers, what it lacks, and what it means for municipalities across the province.

Last month Finance and Treasury Board Minister John Lohr tabled Budget 2025-26: Unlocking Our Potential, outlining a financial plan that promises to lower taxes, invest in healthcare, stimulate economic growth, and make life more affordable. With over $500 million in tax cuts, increased spending on housing, and a record-breaking $2.3 billion capital investment, the budget is certainly ambitious. But for municipalities, the key question remains: does it provide the support they need to thrive?

Joining us to discuss all this is our special guest, Pam Mood, President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities. She’ll give us insight into how municipalities are reacting to the budget, what this means for local governments, and where there might still be gaps in support.

And of course, we will be discussing some of the bigger challenges ahead—particularly adapting to economic pressures, including new U.S. tariffs that could impact local industries in Nova Scotia.

There’s a lot to unpack, so stay with us as we break down the numbers, the policies, and the real-world impacts.
