Capital Conversations

Welcome to Municipal Affairs.

Canada’s capital was the centre of attention for local governments from across the country. More than 2,000 municipal leaders gathered in Ottawa for the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities Tradeshow and Convention — a landmark event that brings together communities of all sizes.

Among those in attendance were delegations from across Beautiful British Columbia. We chatted with many in attendance about their reasoning for being at the event, and what they hope to take away from the FCM Convention.

We first caught up with Prince George Councillor Cori Ramsay.

Attending his first FCM convention, District of Mackenzie Councillor Jesse Wright sat down with us at the convention to talk about his key takeaways.

Coming from Kamloops, British Columbia, we had the pleasure to sit and speak with Kamloops Councillor Nancy Bepple.

For the rural perspective, we have the pleasure to chat with Cariboo Regional District Director Steve Forseth about attending the convention.

We also caught up with Director Forseth’s colleague of the Cariboo Regional District Director Barb Bachmier.

(INTERVIEW)

Sticking in the Northern part of the province, we caught up with newly appointed President of the Northern Local Government Association in BC and Mayor of Smithers, BC, Glayds Atrill, to talk about her takeaways from the convention, and how her community is growing.

(INTERVIEW)

From the District of Squamish, we caught up with Councillor Joel French, who was in attendance at the FCM Convention in Ottawa.

(INTERVIEW)

And Councillor Sean Wood from Parksville, British Columbia, was attending and spoke to us about what he hopes to bring back to Parksville after the convention.

(INTERVIEW)

We also caught up with Trish Mandewo, President of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. She joined us to talk about the importance of BC’s presence at FCM, the ongoing concerns around Bill 15, and how her team plans to carry momentum from Ottawa back home.

(INTERVIEW)

And finally, we close with one of the major highlights of the week: the acclamation of Vancouver City Councillor Rebecca Bligh as the new President of FCM. We spoke with President Bligh on the final day of the convention to discuss her plans for the year ahead and how FCM continues to serve municipalities from coast to coast to coast.
