Cowboys, Pancakes, & Stampede: Green Party Leader Elizabeth May

Welcome to Municipal Affairs. Ah, the Calgary Stampede — a place where cowboy boots crunch gravel, where the smell of pancakes and livestock hangs thick in the air, and where tradition meets politics in the most Canadian of ways. Yes, there are bucking broncos, chuckwagons, and enough denim to make a Levi’s factory blush — but the Stampede is far more than a ten-day rodeo.

It’s a global gathering place. Each year, over four million people pass through Stampede Park, not just to hoot and holler, but to do business, celebrate community, and spark conversations that ripple far beyond the midway.

With more than 1,200 events on the calendar annually — from tourism forums to trade expos — the Stampede drives over $540 million into Calgary’s economy. But it's also become a political arena of its own. Leaders from all corners of the spectrum show up, glad-handing through the flapjack line, boots polished, and ears open.

This year, among the crowd was Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May.

She came not just to take in the sights, but to listen — to Calgarians, to Albertans, to Canadians, and to the political winds blowing across Parliament Hill.

We caught up with Ms. May to hear what she’s been picking up on the ground, and what lies ahead for Parliament’s 45th session.
