Welcome to Municipal Affairs.
Summer in Saskatchewan is more than just sunshine and barbecues—though we’ll never say no to a good grill-out. It’s a season rooted in community, in coming together, and for the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, it’s a time for connection, collaboration, and conversation.
Every June, municipal leaders from across rural Saskatchewan gather for the SARM June District Meetings. It’s a long-standing tradition—one that, this year, celebrates an incredible milestone: 90 years since these important meetings first began.
Over those nine decades, the issues may have evolved, but the purpose has remained the same—bringing rural leaders together to discuss shared challenges, emerging
opportunities, and the future of our communities. This year’s discussions weren’t limited to local concerns. Municipal leaders tackled provincial and even federal matters, emphasizing how interconnected our rural issues truly are.
Each division had the chance to meet directly with the SARM Board and participate in roundtable discussions with subject matter experts—diving deep into the priority topics identified by each RM.
From Kipling to Moose Jaw, Swift Current to Kelvington, Langham to North Battleford—the meetings spanned the province, bringing people together in the spirit of rural resilience and cooperation.
And to get a closer look at what was discussed and what it means for our future, we caught up with SARM President Bill Huber, who shared his insights, reflections, and key takeaways from this year’s meetings.
