MLA Chender announces run for leadership for Nova Scotia NDP



Darthmouth South MLA Claudia Chender has announced her intentions to run for the leadership of the Nova Scotia NDP (NSNDP).


In a 3 minute video posted to the MLA's social media accounts, the first term MLA has become the first candidate for the party.


Chender said that over the last 5 years she has learnt alot, "I have always fought for what matters to you." She added, "Along with our team we have listened, worked with friends and allies, and we have proposed, pushed for, real solutions.


"I'm running because I know that we can do so much more," she said in her launch video.


Currently the NSNDP hold 6 seats in the legislature. After the last election Garry Burrill announced that he would be resigning as the leader of the NSNDP once a new leader was elected.


Chender has the backing of Lisa Lachance MLA for Halifax Citadel-Sable Island and Susan Leblanc MLA for Dartmouth North , former NDP MLAs Pam Birdsall (Lunenburg), Lisa Roberts (Halifax-Needham)


Candidates have until May 21st to register to run, with a leadership election to be held on June 25th.


Party Members have unitl May 30 to sign up as a NSNDP member.
