Richard Edjericon wins North West Territories by-election

Richard Edjericon is the new MLA for the Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh riding, after winning the byeleciton for the riding last night.

According to unofficial results posted on the Elections NWT website, Edjericon received 186 votes of the 439 votes cast in the by election.

His closest competitor was Mary Rose Sunberg, who received 99 votes in Wednesday results. Former MLA for Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh Steve Norm was ousted from the North West Territory Legislature back in November launching this by election.

Norm ran for re-election but garnered only 70 votes in Wednesdays Election.

The assembly ousted Norm over threats he made to his colleagues on social media, and after a public inquiry determined he violated the assembly's code of conduct when he broke mandatory COVID-19 isolation rules.

Caroline Cochrane, the Premier of the Territory tweeted her congratulations to MLA-elect Edjericon, "Congratulations to Richard Edjericon on becoming the next MLA for Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh. I look forward to working with you as we make the NWT a better place for all residents.

"Running for office takes strength and courage. Thank you to all who put their name forward," she added.
