Welcome to Cross Border Interviews, the show where we dive into the insights of municipal political leaders from across Canada.

Our mission is to shine a light on the dedicated individuals who, day in and day out, work around the council table to shape the communities we call home.

For today’s episode, we chat with Town of Coalhurst Councillor Lori Harasem. The Town of Coalhurst grew from the ambitions of pioneers, miners, and adventurers drawn to the thriving coal industry of the early 20th century.

Early Coalhurst blended its coal-mining roots with a robust agricultural presence, hosting a grain elevator run by Ellison Milling and a diverse array of local businesses—dry goods shops, a meat market, hardware stores, blacksmiths, cafés, a hotel, and even an RCMP detachment—alongside churches and schools that formed the social heart of the town.
