SUMA Takes Saskatchewan Municipalities' Case to Ottawa

Across Saskatchewan, municipalities are on the front lines of some of the biggest challenges facing the country — from aging infrastructure and housing shortages to economic uncertainty and the cost of keeping communities growing.
But when local governments need support, their voices often have to travel well beyond city hall.
Earlier this month, representatives from SUMA, SARM, the Government Relations Ministry in Saskatchewan, and mayors from major cities travelled to Ottawa to make the case for municipalities across the province.
The delegation met with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and federal representatives, including Parliamentary Secretary Kody Blois, Secretary of State Buckley Belanger, Minister Eleanor Olszewski, and Parliamentary Secretary Jennifer McKelvie.
The issues on the table were significant: sustained investment in infrastructure, support for communities facing tariff-related economic pressures, and collaboration on housing and the challenges that come with growth.
For SUMA — the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association — these conversations are central to its role. As the collective voice of Saskatchewan's urban municipalities, SUMA works to ensure local governments have a say in the policies and programs that affect the communities they serve.
But making the case is only the beginning. What matters is how that message is received — and whether those conversations lead to meaningful action for municipalities back home.
SUMA Executive Director Jean Marc Nadeau was part of the delegation. He joins us to discuss what SUMA brought to Ottawa, the priorities it put before federal decision-makers, and how those concerns were received.
Today on Municipal Affairs, we look beyond the meetings and the headlines to examine what Saskatchewan's municipalities are asking for, what they heard in response, and what comes next in the effort to secure support for communities across the province. I'm Christopher Brown, and this is Municipal Affairs. ------
