B.C.’s Resource Reckoning

ree

Welcome to Municipal Affairs, B.C.’s communities and families are facing uncertain times. Sluggish economic growth, rising government deficits, and aggressive tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump are putting real pressure on our province’s economy.

Across B.C., the standard of living is slipping instead of rising. And that raises a fundamental question: what kind of future will we leave to the generations that follow us?

At the heart of the answer lies our natural resource sector. For more than a century, it has been the backbone of our economy—delivering healthy paycheques, sustaining communities, and funding the health care, education, and services we all rely on. It’s not just about mills, mines, and fisheries in rural towns. Office towers in Vancouver are filled with resource workers, technology firms in Burnaby are advancing innovation in mining and energy, and government offices in Victoria are supported by the revenues these industries provide.

But the world is changing. The past year has reminded us that we can’t rely on the United States as a stable trading partner. To secure our future, B.C. must diversify its markets. The world wants our copper, our LNG, our lumber, our salmon, and much more. At a time like this, we can’t afford to build barriers that hold back responsible development.

That’s why municipal leaders are stepping up.

At last month’s UBCM convention in Victoria, we spoke with Campbell River mayor Kermit Dahl about the challenges facing the resource sector—and about a new initiative, the Alliance of Resource Communities.

This alliance brings together leaders from across the province to strongly advocate for a secure and brighter economic future, built on the responsible development of our abundant resources.
