Changing of the Guard
Welcome to Municipal Affairs.
Grande Prairie is making history in Alberta’s law enforcement landscape as it transitions from the RCMP to its own locally governed police service.
The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) is being designed to deliver responsive, community-focused policing with local oversight, tailored to meet the city’s unique needs.
This transition, the first of its kind in Alberta in nearly 70 years, is drawing significant attention from municipalities across the province, and even around Canada..
Recruitment is already underway, and by the end of 2024, the city aims to have 41 GPPS police officers trained and deployed, along with 31 peace officers actively serving the community.
At the forefront of this transformation is Chief Dwayne Lakusta, who was appointed in August 2023 as the first Chief of the Grande Prairie Police Service.
Joining him in leading this pivotal initiative is Mayor Jackie Clayton of Grande Prairie.
Today, we’re joined by Mayor Clayton and Chief Lakusta to reflect on the progress made over the past year, the challenges and milestones of the transition process, and what lies ahead as Grande Prairie prepares for 2025.
