Heron beats Chabot to be first Alberta Municipalities President


St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron has been named the first official president of the newly named Alberta Municipalities organization.


Heron received the support of over 75 per cent of the delegates attending this weeks Alberta Municipalities Conference in Edmonton. Heron's only challenger Ward 10 City fo Calgary Councillor Andre Chabot received just over 24 percent of the votes casted.


Heron previously served as Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) Board of Directors in 2015 and Vice President in 2017 as Director Cities up to 500,000.


Heron will lead the organization over the next term, according to the Alberta Municipalities Website the core mission for the organization is, " We are the voice of Alberta's urban municipalities and provides visionary leadership, solutions-based advocacy, and service excellence."


On the first day of the AUMA 2021 conference, AUMA officially announced a rebrand of their organization under the new 'Alberta Municipalities' name.


Heron takes over from Angela Duncan who has been serving as the interim president of the AUMA upon the resignation of former Mayor of Brooks Barry Morishita.
