We’re turning our focus to the relationship between the provincial government and Saskatchewan’s municipalities — and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for communities across the province.

Joining us for a one-on-one conversation is Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister of Government Relations, Erika Ritchie.

Ritchie was appointed to the role by Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck and represents the constituency of Saskatoon Nutana in the Legislative Assembly. As Shadow Minister of Government Relations, her portfolio focuses on the provincial policies, funding decisions, and legislative priorities that directly affect Saskatchewan’s cities, towns, villages, and rural municipalities.

Municipal leaders across the province continue to raise concerns about infrastructure funding, long-term fiscal sustainability, housing pressures, and the growing demand for local services. These issues often require strong collaboration between municipalities and the provincial government — making the Government Relations portfolio a key part of the conversation around how communities grow and thrive.

In today’s interview, we’ll speak with Ritchie about what she’s been hearing from mayors, reeves, councillors, and municipal administrators as she travels the province and meets with local leaders. We’ll also explore how the Saskatchewan NDP views the current municipal landscape and where they believe the province should be focusing its attention when it comes to supporting local governments.

And with the provincial budget set to be tabled on March 18th in the Legislative Assembly, we’ll ask what the Saskatchewan NDP will be watching for — and what they believe municipalities need to see in this year’s budget.
