Welcome to a special edition of Municipal Affairs.
While we traditionally focus on the municipal picture on this show, today we are talking about an issue that has been on the top of minds for families in every single municipality in the province of Alberta.
That is the uncertainty surrounding the start of the new school year.
With just days before students return to classrooms, negotiations between the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association are set to resume next week — and much remains unresolved.
ATA President Jason Schilling says he’s hopeful for a negotiated settlement, one that addresses teachers’ concerns over salaries and classroom conditions.
But the stakes couldn’t be higher. A strong strike mandate from teachers, coupled with TEBA’s recent move to apply for a lockout vote on August 29th, means the possibility of job action is very real.
Best-case scenario: an agreement that allows teachers and students to move forward with stability. Worst-case scenario: classrooms across Alberta face disruption just as the school year begins.
In today's special episode we speak with ATA President Jason Schilling about the path ahead, the challenges facing educators, and what he hopes to see in the final hours before kids head back to school.
