Welcome to Municipal Affairs Leaders from across the West gathered in Victoria for the Western Canadian Municipal Association’s two-day meeting. At the top of the agenda—funding for water and wastewater systems, the future of RCMP contract policing, and the push for meaningful bail reform.
In attendance were representatives from every corner of the region: the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the host of this year's gathering, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities.
But that was just the beginning. Delegates also stood united in the face of another extreme wildfire season, while tackling tough issues such as derelict properties, by-law prosecutions, Treaty Land Entitlement, and the push for greater local autonomy.
Through it all, one theme carried the discussion: collaboration.
Municipal leaders are working together—across provinces and with national partners—to strengthen advocacy, share solutions, and build communities that are stronger, safer, and more resilient.
We sat down with SUMA President Randy Goulden, Alberta Municipalities President Tyler Gandam, Rural Municipalities of Alberta President Kara Westerlund, and Association of Manitoba Municipalities President Kathy Valentino.
