Yukon Votes '25: Municipalities Lay Out Priorities

ree

Welcome to Municipal Affairs.

As the territory heads toward an election, municipal leaders are making sure their voices are heard. Last Month, the Association of Yukon Communities held its final board meeting before voters head to the polls. Out of that meeting came a unified message: strong municipalities mean a strong Yukon.

From Dawson to Watson Lake, from Whitehorse to our smallest hamlets, local governments are on the frontlines—keeping infrastructure running, ensuring safety, and supporting community wellbeing.

Now, AYC has distilled the concerns of its members into a set of clear priorities: sustained investment in infrastructure, long-term financial stability, stronger emergency preparedness, safer communities, and more affordable housing.

These are not abstract policy points—they are the day-to-day challenges that affect Yukoners in their homes, on their streets, and in their workplaces. And as territorial parties craft their platforms, municipal leaders want to make sure those priorities are front and centre.

In this edition of Municipal Affairs, we’ll take a closer look at what’s at stake for Yukon municipalities with AYC President Lauren Hanchar. We will discuss AYC's priorities, the upcoming election, and the role local governments play in shaping the future of the territory.
