Alberta Municipalities Roundtable

Welcome to Municipal Affairs, I'm your host Christopher Brown.

In today's episode, we delve into the heart of Alberta's municipal landscape, addressing critical topics impacting communities across the province. Our roundtable discussion will explore four pressing issues, each of significant importance to municipal leaders and residents alike.

Firstly, we'll be reflecting on the recently concluded Alberta Municipalities 2024 Spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus held in Edmonton on March 14th and 15th. This gathering served as a pivotal platform for municipal leaders to convene, exchange ideas, address key challenges facing their respective communities, and hear from provincial represenatives including members of the cabinet, and the Premier.

Secondly, we'll tackle the urgent need for increased provincial funding for local infrastructure projects.

Our discussion will also touch upon Alberta's Provincial Government Bill 11, proposing the creation of a provincial police agency to provide "police-like" services. This proposed legislation has sparked debates across the province, raising questions about the implications for local law enforcement and community safety.

Lastly, we'll examine the Government of Alberta's intention to introduce political parties at the municipal level through changes to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA). This potential shift in electoral dynamics carries significant implications for local governance and the democratic process within Alberta's municipalities.

Joining us for today's discussion are esteemed guests from Alberta Municipalities: President Tyler Gandam, alongside directors Trina Jones, representing Towns-East, and Dylan Bressey, representing Cities up to 500,000.

Their expertise and perspectives promise to enrich our exploration of these critical issues shaping the future of Alberta's municipalities.

Tune in as we delve into the nuances, challenges, and opportunities facing Alberta's municipal landscape, striving to empower communities and foster informed dialogue towards collective progress.
