Are Alberta Councillors Resigning in Record Numbers?

There are moments in municipal politics when you have to stop… take a step back… and ask a very simple question:

What is going on?

Because across Alberta, the alarm bells are starting to ring.

Over the last several weeks, we have seen resignation after resignation from municipal councils across this province.

Mayors. Councillors. A reeve.

People who, just months ago, were elected by their neighbours to serve their communities for the next four years are now stepping away from public office.

And that raises a question that I think we need to take seriously:

Are we witnessing a trend in Alberta municipal politics — or are we simply seeing something that has happened before?

So, we decided to do the research.

We searched municipal websites. We searched publicly available social media channels. We looked for announcements, council minutes, notices of vacancies and reports of by-elections.

And what we found is certainly worth paying attention to.
