What Ottawa's Decisions Could Mean for Weyburn's Future

The decisions made in Ottawa can have a very real impact on life in Saskatchewan — from the roads we drive on, to the homes we build, to the services communities rely on every day.

Earlier this month, municipal leaders from across Saskatchewan travelled to the nation's capital with a message for the federal government: local communities need long-term infrastructure investment, support through economic uncertainty, and solutions that will help them grow.

The delegation brought together representatives from SUMA, SARM, the Government Relations Ministry in Saskatchewan, and mayors from some of the province's major cities. Their meetings included discussions with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and federal representatives, including Parliamentary Secretary Kody Blois, Secretary of State Buckley Belanger, Minister Eleanor Olszewski, and Parliamentary Secretary Jennifer McKelvie.

On the agenda: infrastructure funding, tariff-related economic pressures, housing challenges, and the future of Saskatchewan communities.

But for municipal leaders, the conversations in Ottawa don't end when the meetings are over. The real test comes when they return home — and have to turn those discussions into decisions about local priorities, services, and spending.

Weyburn Mayor Jeff Richards was part of that delegation. We spoke with him following his return to find out what he heard in Ottawa, what issues Weyburn brought forward, and what lessons he is bringing back to the community.

With Weyburn's municipal budget now in the works, the timing matters. What could the discussions in Ottawa mean for the city's priorities? What support can municipalities realistically expect? And how will those conversations shape the financial decisions facing Weyburn in the months ahead?

Today on Municipal Affairs, Weyburn Mayor Jeff Richards joins us to discuss the delegation's trip to Ottawa — and what comes next for Weyburn. I'm Christopher Brown, and This Is Municipal Affairs.
