City of Yorkton Take Their Case to Ottawa

For communities across Saskatchewan, the challenges are often local — but the solutions can depend on decisions made hundreds of kilometres away, in Ottawa.
Earlier this month, a delegation representing municipalities from across the province travelled to the nation’s capital with a clear message: communities need the infrastructure, economic support, and federal partnerships to keep growing.
Representatives from SUMA, SARM, the provincial government, and mayors from major cities met with federal officials, including Parliamentary Secretary Kody Blois, Secretary of State Buckley Belanger, Minister Eleanor Olszewski, and Parliamentary Secretary Jennifer McKelvie, as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
At the table were some of the biggest pressures facing Saskatchewan communities: the need for sustained infrastructure investment, the economic uncertainty surrounding tariffs, and the growing challenge of providing housing while supporting local growth.
But making the case in Ottawa is one thing. Turning those conversations into concrete results is another.
Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle was part of the delegation. After returning from the capital, he sat down with us to discuss what he heard, what Yorkton brought forward, and what municipalities are asking the federal government to do next.
And with a similar delegation making the trip last October, there’s another important question: has anything changed in the past year — and is Ottawa any closer to delivering the support Saskatchewan communities say they need?
Today on Municipal Affairs, we look at the issues that brought the City of Yorkton to Ottawa, the commitments they’re hoping to secure, and what it all means for residents in Yorkton.
I'm Christopher Brown, and this is Municipal Affairs.
