From City Hall to Parliament Hill

Welcome to Municipal Affairs.

It’s a well-worn path, but not an easy one: making the leap from municipal government to federal politics. Many have tried. Few have succeeded. But in the most recent federal election, we saw a notable shift — a wave of municipal leaders stepping onto the national stage.

Among them: former Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty, former Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, and Dominique O’Rourke, once a city councillor in Guelph. And perhaps most surprising of all — Kristina Tesser Derksen, the former Milton Town Councillor who clinched her federal seat in dramatic fashion.

On election night, she trailed her opponent. But after a judicial recount, her victory was confirmed — by a razor-thin margin of just 21 votes. She is now the Member of Parliament for the newly created riding of Milton East—Halton Hills South.

Tesser Derksen first entered politics in 2018, representing Ward 1 on Milton Town Council, and was re-elected in 2022. Her journey from the council chambers of a growing Ontario town to the House of Commons under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney is one of resilience, timing — and, perhaps, a bit of destiny.

We sat down with MP Kristina Tesser Derksen to talk about those early days of transition from local to federal politics, the lessons she’s carried forward, and what she hopes to accomplish now that she’s on Parliament Hill.
