The Alberta government has announced that retired Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta Justice Adele Kent will lead the investigation into Justice Minister Kaycee Madu phone call to the chief of the Edmonton Police Service.
The investigations was launched after a CBC report, stated that Minister Madu had received a distracted driving ticket in March of 2021, upon receiving that ticket Madu called the chief of the Edmonton Police Service Dale McFee.
While both parties have stated that the phone call was not about throwing the ticket out.
Justice Kent will determine, considering both the content and context of the Phone Call, whether:
in making the Phone Call, Minister Madu interfered or attempted to interfere with the administration of justice or
the Phone Call created a reasonable perception of an interference with the administration of justice.
A report of the investigation is expected to be delivered to the Deputy minister of Executive Council by February 15th.
Premier Jason Kenney announced on January 17th days after the CBC article dropped that Minister Madu was stepping back from his role as Justice Minister until a investigation was completed.
Since then Sonya Savage the Minister of Energy was acting as Justice Minister.
