Welcome to Municipal Affairs.
Canada’s capital was the centre of attention for local governments from across the country. More than 2,000 municipal leaders gathered in Ottawa for the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities Tradeshow and Convention — a landmark event that brings together communities of all sizes.
During the four-day convention, we spoke with delegates from across Ontario who were in attendance about their reasons for attending the event and what they hoped to gain from the FCM Convention.
We sat down with someone who has been advocating for Municipal Issues for decades, and was Past President of FCM, Halton Hills Regional Councillor Clark Somerville.

Also in attendance was Councillor Lukas Oakley of the County of Brant. Councillor Oakley spoke to us about his views on the FCM.

With Ottawa serving as both backdrop and host city, we also spoke with 1st Vice President and local councillor Tim Tierney about welcoming the convention to his community — and how he’s preparing for the presidency when the event heads to Edmonton next year.

And finally, we close with one of the major highlights of the week: the acclamation of Vancouver City Councillor Rebecca Bligh as the new President of FCM. We spoke with President Bligh on the final day of the convention to discuss her plans for the year ahead and how FCM continues to serve municipalities from coast to coast to coast.
