Mississauga Votes ’26: Mayoral Candidate Dipika Damerla

1 min read

Mississauga is changing.

Today, 62 percent of its residents identify as a visible minority, and one in four identifies as South Asian. Yet the city has never elected an ethnic mayor.

Now, Incumbent Ward 7 Councillor Dipika Damerla is seeking to change that.

But this campaign is about more than representation. It comes at a time when 46 percent of Mississauga residents surveyed say the city is moving in the wrong direction.

Dipika Damerla says the answer is a city that works differently — beginning with a freeze on property taxes, an independent Auditor General for the city, and a fundamental change to how policing costs are shared between Mississauga and Brampton.

She argues Mississauga currently carries 62 percent of the police budget, compared with 38 percent for Brampton, despite their populations being similar — a division she says is based on an outdated formula created decades ago.

For Damerla, the question is whether Mississauga is ready for a different kind of leadership — one focused on affordability, accountability, and changing the way City Hall does business.

On this edition of Municipal Affairs Votes, we speak with mayoral candidate Dipika Damerla about her campaign, her priorities, and her vision for the future of Mississauga.

Thank you, Christopher Brown for an in-depth interview with Dipika Damerla.

In my opinion, Dipika Damerla is a ROGUE councillor. She states, “I have a very clear vision for Mississauga”, and “that’s the city I’m building”, and “I keep doubling down”. She says four times, “look at my record”, and she claims, “Mississauga first”.

Really? Here is Dipika Damerla’s past record:

On Facebook (July 14/26) Dipika Damerla replied, “Some people wanted a provincial job instead!”- referencing Bonnie Crombie’s failed provincial seat and not putting Mississauga first. HOWEVER, Dipika Damerla’s council seat was without a proxy for a period of time (disrespecting city council) while Dipika Damerla ALSO FAILED a provincial race in 2022 for the exact same…
