The Women of Rural Alberta

ree

In this roundtable edition of Municipal Affairs, we pull back the curtain on what it’s really like to serve as a rural municipal politician in Alberta.

The work can be demanding—long council meetings, tough decisions that affect neighbours and friends, and the constant balancing act of public service and personal life. But it also comes with wins—both big and small—that remind leaders why they stepped into the role in the first place.

Today, we sit down with three women who know this journey firsthand. They’ll share candid insights into the realities of rural governance: the unique pressures that come with representing smaller communities, the impact the work has had on their personal and professional lives, and the advice they would give to other women who may be considering a run for office.

Joining us are Charlyn Moore, Councillor for Lac La Biche County, Lisa Rosvold, Reeve for Municipal District of Big Horn, and Karen Rosvold, Councillor for the County of Grande Prairie.

Together, their stories highlight not only the challenges of serving in rural government, but also the resilience, vision, and passion it takes to lead in today’s political climate—and why the voices of women at the council table matter now more than ever. Correction: In the Recording, we mention that Reeve Lisa Rosvold is the Reeve of Big Horn County; that is incorrect. Reeve Lisa Rosvold, in fact, the Reeve of the Municipal District of Big Horn. We apologize for this.
